Open The Earth emerged from the rubble of a tumultuous area of Ipswich soon after the earth was rocked by the blasphemic sound of a revolution in the hardcore music scene of Australia, and why wouldn’t they pull themselves out of the depths, coming from similar origins as headstrong causeless rebels Facepalm A Pinata and Torn From Grace (unfortunately these guys are no longer with us). Beginning with Broc and his startlingly in your face screeches and growls, Open The Earth are following previously well known Australian metal/hardcore bands like Parkway Drive and I Killed The Prom Queen with guttoral screams and flowing melodies, brutal breakdowns and shredding solos. Once again we find Kieran bouncing around the stage with his hyperactivity boardering on the obsessive compulsive, but we find his talents directed more towards shredding the toenails off as one of the guitarists. But following hopefully in the footsteps of their influences OTE will carve themselves a piece of monumental musical success. With sounds not unlike Architects and Dillinger Escape Plan OTE will continue to amass followers to their not-so-unique unique sound.

Having found their footing amongst the tangled roots of the Brisbane hardcore/metal scene OTE have like many truly powerful entities made their presence known by simply stomping on your face.  Unlike most new bands who start off slowly and gradually make a name for themselves OTE have come out of the gate at full gallop and have mauled and maimed a few stragglers as the packs of undernourished “hardcore” kids attempt to move from the fray.

I truly must admit to literally stumbling onto this relatively unknown group of guys, shockingly while attending a gig for the infamous Facepalm A Pinata, however such an occurrence apparently was not by chance, it was a well orchestrated plan devised by a most elusive individual whose identity I presently dont know. But whatever the case anyone who is a fan or admirer of any variation of the hardcore genre should check their tracks at either their myspace or facebook pages.

At the present time OTE are recording new songs at Facepalm Recording Studios, so be expecting some eardrum shattering grotesque moshing and headbanging mastery your way in the near future.

The electro-hardcore wave has taken the Australian alternative music scene by storm, finding many of us captivated by the awesome combination of throat tearing screams, earth trembling breakdowns and melodic synth. Two years and about 50 Australian electro-hardcore/metal/experimental bands later, there’s no doubt the wave has reached a plateau where the excitement and originality now leaves this relatively new genre somewhat bland and predictable. Luckily, every so often a band comes along to reignite the burnt out wick.

Lurking in the shadows of the Sydney local music scene for the better part of 3 years I give you a group of musicians who do exactly that. Thoughts Under Fire began as a side project by their lead vocalist Ryan and Sydney metal/hardcore band Murder My Suicide. Unlike many bands aforementioned, TUF have focussed their attention on clean vocals. The surprising part, (even for someone like myself who prefers to gorge himself in the insanity and mayhem of the shrillest and most bone-shattering of screamo vocals in modern hardcore/metal), is that it isn’t half bad!

The Sydney quartet delivers the most enticing array of metal, rock and electro synth that’ll leave you saying… “Why didn’t I hear of these guys sooner?” It’s obvious that Thoughts Under Fire is made up of musicians, not just a bunch of “dudes” playing instruments. Each song is so intricately written, with upbeat choruses, clean mature vocals (not reminiscent of a 12 year old school boy like many cleans you hear today), synth layers and solos that absolutely obliterate other local attempts, and thankfully the occasional breakdown and screamo to keep us metal fans well satisfied.

They’d describe themselves as Bullshit Guitarfuck. Their biggest influence is the late great Andy Williams. Call of Duty is the origin of all their life skills. And they would really like someone to Free Fifi. Only Sleeping, made up of Sheldon Johnston on vocals, Daniel Belič on lead guitar, Christopher Nunn on rhythm guitar, and Stuart Ross on drums are an up and coming band emerging from the back streets of Ipswich.

Starting as many a garage band does from the, dregs of the school music room, hours upon hours of Fifa have brought the boys to a fairly exciting point in their musical careers. They have become almost a household name to the hardcore scene in Ipswich, with their erratically timed, dynamically screamed, energetically performed music. There is no doubt that Only Sleeping are making a neat little indent into the ever-growing scene in our South East Region and with a short upcoming tour with the likes of House Vs. Hurricane and Confession, it would seem that they are currently standing at the beginning of a road that is bound to lead them along an exciting and fruitful adventure!

I gathered the boys into a quaint little msn conversation box to ask them a few questions and let you in on the dynamics of this exciting new band. And after a few difficult questions and a fair bit of friendly bickering between the band this is what I ended up with…

Pip: So how long have you guys been together…? (In less of a gay partner’s way and more of a band sense)?

Daniel: Since it was written in thy stone

Sheldon: Since Moses said hi Jesus wtf is with this big rock oh you want me to write in it?

Stu: Weeeee have been playing together for about…..4 years? And have been sexual partners for much longer.

Pip: So it’s a well established relationship of musical and sexual fusion?

Daniel: Without a single doubt

Stu: Absolutely

Pip: Were you guys all friends at the beginning?? Or did that come about from the common musical interests?

Chris: B

Daniel: Yeah B

Chris: The second one. Sheldon and I had a band that played Metallica covers and we slowly found other people at our school that could play instruments

Daniel: I didn’t appreciate Stu at all until I realized he could double kick and at that turn, presented to him, my anoos.

Pip: So who is the driving force behind the band?

Daniel: If anyone id say its Andy Williams

Stu: He has definitely made us realize, hey, loving another man doesn’t have to be gay. ………..but it helps if you are.

Pip: When did you play your first real gig?

Stu: I would say our first real show was that one at CWA with fighting for lacey and no vocals even though it sucked

Daniel: People still liked us though, which was crazy

Stu: Yes they did, that filled us with confidence

Pip: So you had no vocals then… which means the lineup has changed a few times. What made you decided to put Sheldon at the front??

Chris: At the beginning of this year when we started doing shows, we realized we needed a vocalist and Chris wanted to play guitar instead of bass so Sheldon gave it a go

Sheldon: We nearly weren’t a band so I decided one day that I thought I could blach … so I was like blach

Pip: So you all are interested in pretty much the same music?

Stu: Yes and no

Chris: Not at all in some ways

Pip: And what would you describe your genre as?

Daniel: Bullshit guitar fuck

Chris: Bullshit guitar fuck

Stu: Bullshit guitar fuck is really accurate.

Pip: kind of musical inspirations do you have?

Chris: Music that catches us off guard and sounds really original or interesting or technical

Stu: I personally am inspired by all techy heavy bands that are what I’m talking about, all the time.

Sheldon: Mainly Every Time I Die?

Daniel: The Number Twelve Looks Like You / Tera Melos

Pip: Do you think music is getting less and less original these days? Or do you think there is still space for originality?

Stu: It IS less original, not getting. It’s there. There is space but it gets harder and harder with time (see that set up? someone, please…)

Pip: That’s what she said

Stu: Thank you pip

Chris: I wouldn’t say that music is less original but I would say that there’s less of a market for original music

Pip: So would you guys say that you are original?

Sheldon: No we rip off everything

Chris: Sometimes

Stu: More so than other bands around

Sheldon: No one is original You have to have some reference

Daniel: Oh man that could be disputed so much lol

Pip: So there is a contrasting opinion between you?

Chris: Here we go

Daniel: Let’s not even go there…

Chris: We just all bring our own perspective and musical tastes together in the hope of making something new

(Consequently a heated debate erupted within the band and putting it all in words would take up a very lengthy amount of time out of your day so I decided to cut it out)

Pip: I won’t mention this one again for awhile lol

Stu: Ding, next question.

Pip: Why the name Only Sleeping?

Daniel: It was the title to a poem to my dead dog, scruffles

Chris: Because we couldn’t settle on a name, it’s from a Beatles song

Pip: Where do you see yourselves in 5 years time As a band?

Daniel: Being heroine junkies

Chris: Poor and unappreciated and naked

Stu: Hating on each other while cramped into a minivan on tour in Europe. WHO’S WITH ME!

Pip: Who is the most popular with the ladies?

Stu: I don’t know if we’ve really ever encountered any of that? Sheldon is the front man, I guess…

Daniel: I’d say Andy Williams again

Chris: I think we’ve seen more dudes undies than girl’s panties

Pip: If you could do a compilation with any artists on the planet dead or alive… who would it be???

Stu: You have to ask?

Pip: If you got the opportunity to open for a band like say in the next year. Who would you want to open for?

Chris: Probably one of the bands who we’ve really seen cool stuff from recently like The chariot and Jack the Stripper

Stu: I would die if I played with shai hulud or every time I die.

Sheldon: Second that

Pip: Who have you enjoyed playing alongside the most so far??

Stu: Hospital the Musical and Jack the Stripper hands dooooown

Sheldon: Bennosen Theory

Daniel: And to the north too

Pip: Do you think bands have to care about “their band” or can they just be musically talented?

Daniel: They have to care. Otherwise the band wouldn’t exist. It’d be just individual musically talented artists.

Chris: The best ones are probably where they don’t care because it will make them more likely to do exactly what they want

Stu: I think you have to care about your band, otherwise you wouldn’t be in it, you DON’T have to care about what other people think of your band, which is an important distinction to make I think.

Pip: So why are you in the band?

Stu: Loose women and free drinks…

Daniel: So I can jiggle my junk on stage

Sheldon: Because its fun and because the chance of not having to work in an office for a bit is very appetizing

Stu: In all seriousness, I just like playing music and am lucky enough to have formed a very comfortable relationship with very compatible dudes, musically and personally, and it’s allowed us to write and play the music we like while having ridiculous amounts of fun.

Pip: So you guys are down a bass player at the moment…..if you could have anyone ever… who would it be?

Stu: If we could have any bass player ever……. I would take back Sean haha.

Daniel: Probably Rambo because if anyone didn’t like us he’d piano wire them with the bass strings

Chris: He’d rip their face off

Sheldon: I hate bassists they are gay and… Move to sydny

Bursting forth in a myriad of sounds both digital and somewhat unholy comes the newest kids on the block FACEPALM A PINATA (FAP for short). Leading this quarrelsome quintet is the amiable Kieran Childs vocalising his somewhat unique style of lyrical genius (or dare I say insanity), but this isn’t about a single man, or woman in the drummers case, but simply as a unique insight into the bands rhetoric and make-up.

These guys, and girl, are revolutionising the hardcore scene with their contemporary stylisation of this misinterpreted genre. With the brutal breakdowns and throat shreddingly scratchy vocals mixed with the upbeat jostle of the techno scene encapsulates this unique bands’ sound. Be on the lookout for these guys showcasing their “skillz” in their home town of Ipswich soon.

Coming from relatively unknown origins FAP have already amassed a decent following of local fans and are quickly putting Ipswich on the map. Many have tried and failed in the ongoing quest to mix metal and electronic music into a new breed of mosh-mayhem music. Mostly, these attempted cross breeds have brought into existence horrible mutated monstrosities, but FAP have managed to keep the peace, so to speak, by giving equal air time. No matter your opinions maybe, brace yourself when these rambunctious rebels decide to come knocking at your door. And make sure you bring some towels, for your ears will be bleeding from sheer delight at this simply orgasmic sound.

Brisbane hardcore legends, The Amity Affliction are back with what many perceive to be the most highly anticipated Australian album of its genre this year. With only days remaining before it hits all major and minor music stores around the country, many can rest assured that Amity will not disappoint; having already released their first track from the sophomore album, “I Hate Hartley”. Which has been cleverly grafted to facebook and twitter meaning you can only download the track after sharing it with all your friends or followers on the social network sites, tricky much??

Mutiny Online would like to commend The Amity Affliction on their fine work with the currently released track, “I Hate Hartley” maintains the bands’ original sound, however brings forth a slightly more commercial element which will undoubtedly gain Amity even more fans, possibly on an international scale.
